Las Cruces Police Arrest Shooting Suspect

Las Cruces police have arrest the man suspected in the April 17 shooting that injured a 36-year-old man.

Daniel Leyva, 26, of the 800 block of north Mesquite Street, is charged with one count of shooting at or from a motor vehicle causing great bodily harm. The charge is a second-degree felony.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Friday, April 17, Las Cruces police we’re dispatched to the report of a shooting at a mobile home park on the 900 block of east Madrid Avenue. Officers learned a 36-year-old man was shot at least once in his abdomen and transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigators interviewed witnesses to the incident who identified Leyva as the man who fired a shotgun from the driver’s seat of a primer-gray pickup. The gunshot struck the victim who was standing outside a mobile home.

The victim sought help inside the mobile home while Leyva drove away from the scene before police arrived.

Police obtained a warrant for Leyva’s arrest. He was located and arrested on the warrant Wednesday morning.

Leyva was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
