“New Eyes on New Mexico” Opening In Las Cruces

New Eyes on New Mexico, a solo exhibit featuring artwork by Victoria Chick that features the landscapes of southern New Mexico, will be on display at the Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main St. Friday, Feb. 7 through Saturday, March, 21.

Chick’s paintings explore frequently overlooked areas in the region where forgotten elements of past lives can be found; ghost towns, abandoned settlements and homesteads.

As a transplant from another state, Chick wonders about the indigenous people and settlers who sought to establish a relationship between themselves, the wildlife, and the landscape. By asking questions and listening to the stories and practical wisdom of native new Mexicans, she has developed a more intimate awareness of her new home. Using a cat motif to reflect her observations as an outsider, Chick weaves together a new portrait of this dynamic region.

Chick will discuss her inspirations and artistic process in a public program at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Branigan Cultural Center. Afterwards, she will lead a tour of the exhibition.

The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 36. For additional information, visit the website at  museums.las-cruces.org  or call 575/541-2154.
