Las Cruces Is Home To One Of New Mexico's Largest Luminaria Displays

The fall semester is coming to an end and the New Mexico State University community will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the celebration of the winter holiday season.

From 6 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 2, NMSU will host its 34th annual “Noche de Luminarias,” or “Night of the Lights,” at Corbett Center Student Union.

“This event signifies the beginning of the holiday season for the campus. It’s tradition for some of our students and community to start their holiday activities with this celebration. Other students see it as a time of reflection not only for the past year, but their time here at NMSU as they may be getting ready to graduate the next week,” said Bruce Vandevender, director of Campus Activities.

The event is sponsored by Campus Activities, Corbett Center Student Union, NMSU Dining Services, Office of the Chancellor and Office of the President, the Associated Students of NMSU along with Auxiliary Administration and the Barnes & Noble Bookstore. The Las Cruces High School band and the LCHS band Parents Association provide the materials, set-up and the lighting of the luminarias as a part of their community fundraising program.

This show of lights is one of the largest luminaria displays in New Mexico, along with this attraction other activities and entertainment also will be available to the public free of charge.
