2 Suspects Charged in Las Cruces Auto Burglary Spree

Las Cruces Police arrested two men suspected of breaking into and burglarizing vehicles early Tuesday morning.

Benjamin Barela, 21, and 19-year-old Dominik Kevin Haines are both charged with two counts of auto burglary and conspiracy.

At about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the 3000 bock of Majestic Ridge after a resident saw two men checking door handles on several vehicles in the neighborhood. The officer first on scene spotted the two men, later identified as Barela and Haines, standing near a black car with its trunk open.

The two men took off running as the officer approached. Officers detained both suspects after a brief foot pursuit.

Investigators learned that both men were checking door handle sand burglarizing vehicles near a hotel on Avenida de Mesilla before driving to the Majestic Ridge neighborhood and doing the same thing.

Barela and Haines were booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where they are initially being held without bond.
