"Aggies Against Violence Week" At NMSU

Aggies Against Violence Week is a campus wide initiative to help end violence, (whether it be sexual, domestic/interpersonal, physical, emotional, cultural, psychological, or bias related) both on the NMSU campus and in the community as a larger whole. This year’s committee has been working under the mission statement “Aggies Against Violence Week seeks to educate about the different forms of violence; to empower and provide solidarity for those affected by violence and create a safer community.”

AAVW is composed of three main events starting April 24th, 2017. Below is the exact schedule.

Monday April 24th, 2017Motivational Speaker-7:00 PM in the Aggie Lounge (Corbett): Pina De Rosa will be speaking about the effects of being sexually assaulted on a college campus from her personal point of view.

Tuesday April 25th, 2017Conscious Campus Intuitive- 7:00 PM in the Corbett Auditorium: We will be screening the documentary ‘The Hunting Ground’. Following the screening we will have an expert panel consisting of: SANE Nurse Stacy Blazer-Clark; the WAVE Program Specialist Meg Long; NMSU Police Department Victim Services Coordinator Amanda Bowen; Dean of Students Michael Jasek and Title IX Coordinator; Lauri Millot.

Wednesday April 26th, 2017Take Back the Night- 6:30 PM we will gather outside Educational Services building: A march will begin and continue down through the residence halls (Pinion, Garcia, RGH) through Corbett, and up through Chamisa and end at the outdoor stage behind Corbett. Starting at 7:00 PM, Ken Nwadike (Free Hugs Project) will be the keynote speaker for the event. At 7:45 PM a candle will be lit for an all-night Candle Light Vigil lasting until 6:30 AM. From 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM DJ Cykloid will be providing music. As the sun rises at 6:30 AM the candle will be extinguished and a tree will be planted to signify NMSU’s ongoing efforts to reduce violence.

At each event there will be an “It’s On Us” photo booth for students to show their support.

We sincerely hope that you can support these events by attending one or all because “NMSU does not tolerate violence, not for the dis-empowered or marginalized, not for the whole; when one is oppressed we are all oppressed.”
