A former Catholic school teacher has been sentenced to nearly a year in jail after pleading guilty to having a sexual relationship with a student. Prosecutors say 32-year-old Gary Vau Jr. had a relationship with a 17-year-old female student at Las Cruces Catholic School, where he was a volunteer art teacher.
Prosecutor Davis R. Ruark says Vau and the student began texting each other in April 2014. He says the student became Vau's classroom assistant in the fall and they engaged in sexual acts at the school between October 2014 and January 2015.
The judge sentenced Vau to 364 days in jail and five years of probation. He will also have to register as a sex offender, complete community service and pay the victim restitution for her counseling services.
