NMSU To Host "Fort Bliss" Film Screening, Discussion With Director

The public is invited to attend a free showing of the movie “Fort Bliss,” in New Mexico State University’s Domenici Hall S.P. and Estelle Yates Theater beginning at 5:45 p.m. Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11. Following the presentation, the audience will have the opportunity to meet Claudia Myers, film director, writer and co-producer, during a public discussion and reception.

“This movie makes the hardship of deployment very visible,” said Kenneth Hacker, professor and head of the communication studies department, who coordinated Myers’ visit. “I am proud and honored to bring this talented filmmaker to NMSU to meet veterans and their families.”

The film, which takes place in El Paso, Texas, follows the story of an army medic and single mother working to reintegrate back into her family and civilian life after an extended tour in Afghanistan. Hacker said he and his wife, who deployed to Kosovo in 2010, watched the movie earlier this year.

“It was powerful,” he said. “I saw my wife in the strong female sergeant and myself in the angry father left at home with a small boy.”

“Fort Bliss” has been reviewed by the New York Times and featured on NPR, CNN and in the Washington Post. The film stars Michelle Monaghan, known for roles in “Mission Impossible: III” and “True Detective,” and Ron Livingston, of “Office Space” and “Band of Brothers.”

Prior to the evening showing, there will be an invitation-only afternoon session with Myers.

Hosting this presentation are NMSU’s College of Arts and Sciences, Military and Veterans Programs, Department of Communication Studies and Creative Media Institute.

Local community sponsors include the Las Cruces Sun-News, Adventure Travel, Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces, and Lorenzo’s.

The showing is part of NMSU’s first-ever Military and Veterans Appreciation Week, Nov. 7-13. For a full list of the week’s events, visit mvp.nmsu.edu/military-and-veterans-appreciation-week/.
