Las Cruces – Drivers in Las Cruces who haven't paid traffic citations that they got in the mail soon could be getting letters from credit agencies ordering them to pay up.
Las Cruces' Financial Services Department says that almost 35 percent of traffic camera citations haven't been paid since the city's Safe Traffic Operations Program began almost two years ago.
The balance owed to Redflex Traffic Systems, which oversees the city's red-light enforcement camera program, is now at $1.4 million, through February.
Since the city gets 25 percent of the fines collected, that amounts to $360,114 in uncollected fines for the city.
Redflex has arranged for a third-party collection agency to seek outstanding citations.
The city has received $678,173 in collected fines.
