Driven By History and Preservation

Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra meets with New Mexico State University Professor of History and Preservationist, Dr. Jon Hunner. He is helping to plan NMSU’s National Park Service centennial celebration, and will be on the road to research parks nationwide.

“Driven by History” and his love for preservation, you can say that Dr. Hunner is an aficionado of our National Parks; so much so, that while on sabbatical this summer and fall he will go on the road to tour our National Parks from coast to coast. He says the 100 the birthday celebration of the National Park Service will benefit our local, national and international economy. “We get a lot of benefits from the tourists who come to White Sands and the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Nationally these parks are places where history actually happened, at least many of the ones I am going to go to. Our country was formed at Independence Hall in Philadelphia; it was fought over at Concord, at Gettysburg, and Palo Alto Battlefield where the Mexican-American war started; I’ll be visiting all of these sites.” In addition, he says the National Park Service is a model for other countries to preserve their own history.

Hunner will be checking in periodically on PUENTES about his adventures on the road. You can also follow him on his weekly blog at www.drivenbyhistory.blogspot.com.
