Preserving Traditions at the 2nd Annual Las Cruces Spanish Market

February 12, 2016 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra meets with President of the Friends of the Taylor Family Monument, Cynthia Garrett; and Las Cruces Spanish Market Entertainment Chair, ErlindaPortillo.

Last year the Spanish Colonial Arts Society of Santa Fe came to Las Cruces to share traditional Spanish Art and to help the artists continue with their craft. Garrett says nearly fifty artists will take part at the 2nd Annual Las Cruces Spanish Market on Saturday, February 20th, and Sunday, February 21st at Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces with expositions of tinwork, colchas, retablos, jewelry, straw-work, weaving, pottery, ironwork and carvings. Four of the Spanish colonial artists will go out to four schools in the area: Alma D’Arte Charter School; J. Paul Taylor Academy; Central and Fairacres Schools. She says another aspect of the Market is a series of lectures.

Portillo says this year the Spanish Market will begin with music at the Rio Grande Theatre on Friday, February 19th at 7:30 p.m. at the “Viva Cultura" Concert, with artists Rondalla de Albuquerque and Son Veracruz.
