A Unique Sisterhood of Firefighters

June 19, 2015 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES a la comunidad, bridges to the community, Emily Guerra meets with Las Cruces Fire Department (LCFD) Battalion Chief Kristen Andersen and Fire Chief Travis Brown. The LCFD recently broke ground for Fire Station #8 at the East Mesa Public Safety Complex and will soon be recruiting to fill thirteen new positions.

Andersen became the first female officer for the LCFD in 1997, and one of only 150 female Battalion Chiefs in the nation. She encourages women to join the department and be part of unique sisterhood of firefighters, and says “the national average is probably around 2 to 3 percent.” LCFD currently has two female employees from 127 sworn personnel.

Brown has been with the LCFD for 26 years. He encourages both men and women to apply, especially “if you have a strong desire to serve, to make a difference in their community.” For more information on how you can apply and be a part of the LCFD, visit their website at   www.clcfd.com.
