SWEC and Earth Day

April 12, 2013 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, Emily Guerra bridges the community with Southwest Environmental Center (SWEC) Executive Director Kevin Bixby with an overview of their projects and events planned for this year including Earth Day. Established in 1992, SWEC’s mission is “to protect and restore native wildlife and their habitats in the southwestern borderlands.”

Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970 and is now recognized worldwide. On that day more than twenty million Americans from schools and communities across the United States participated in peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform. In 1990 Earth Day became internationally recognized, and is now observed in 192 countries and celebrated by more than a billion people every year.

Locally Earth Day will be observed in Las Cruces with an Earth Day Fair which will be held on Sunday, April 21st at Young Park with several organizations including SWEC. Bixby says “he would like to see Earth Day become a global acknowledgement that we all share a vision for a healthy planet.” SWEC’s 6th Annual Toyota Prius raffle will be drawn on that day as well.
