Short Lockdown at Sierra Middle School in Las Cruces After Possible Social Media Threat

LAS CRUCES — Sierra Middle School on Wednesday was placed on lockdown after administrators learned of a possible threat made against the school on social media. The individuals involved were quickly identified, and Las Cruces Police Department were on site.

As a precaution, the school was placed on lockdown for about 40 minutes while police investigated. Nearby Booker T. Washington Elementary was also briefly placed on “shelter-in-place.”

After the lockdown was lifted, Sierra Middle School remained in “modified shelter-in-place” mode. Students and staff were safe during the lockdown. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Parents were notified through automated messages sent through In Touch. Those who did not receive a notification are encouraged to contact the school to ensure your contact information is up-to-date.

Las Cruces Public Schools takes threats of violence very seriously, and encourages students, staff and parents to report anything of concern to the school and police. All threats will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action will be taken.
