Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) now publishes 6 different Water Quality Consumer Confidence Reports (CCR) every year to provide comprehensive information about drinking water quality in each of its service areas. The most recent Report, with 2018 data, was mailed out at the beginning of July 2019, to all customers within the Las Cruces Municipal Water System (LCMWS).
The annual CCR is required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) to report water quality information to customers. This report is designed to provide details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to standards set by regulatory agencies. This report is a snapshot of last year’s water quality provided by LCU to more than 100,000 residents.
“As you look through the data tables, you will see that once again, we have no water quality violations,” said Adrienne L. Widmer, P.E., LCU deputy director for water. “LCU is committed to providing the community with relevant information.”
In addition to the LCMWS, LCU also provides water to customers in 5 other water systems: Las Alturas Estates, Hacienda Acres Water System, Mesilla Park Manor, Pecan Acres/University Estates, and San Andres Estates. The 2018 CCR from these water systems are available on the City of Las Cruces website at www.las-cruces.org. Simply type “CCR” in the search bar and click on your water system. This year the report should be easier to read, thanks to customer feedback. “We understand that it’s a substantial read, but this year we’ve used a larger font size to hopefully make it easier to read,” explained Widmer.
LCU provides about 7 billion gallons of drinking water to customers in Las Cruces each year. The source of our drinking water is groundwater from the Mesilla and Jornada Bolsons. The City has a distribution system of 25 wells within or near the city limits to supply our community with high quality drinking water.
These wells draw water from depths of 300 to 1,000 feet below the ground’s surface. Small amounts of naturally occurring minerals from rock in the aquifer, dissolve into the water and accounts for moderate levels of calcium, manganese and iron. This common “hard water” typical in the Southwest can affect the aesthetic quality of the water by increasing hardness and may slightly alter the color and taste.
