Audio Essay: Las Cruces Event Is An Expression Of Solidarity With El Paso

Mayor Ken Miyagishima, Councillor Gabe Vasquez and the Las Cruces City Council were joined by Rep. Xochitl Torres Small, New Mexico Lt. Gov. Howie Morales and others at the Downtown Civic Plaza on Monday evening for an Expression of Solidarity with the People of El Paso.

Here is a statement from the Mayor:

“I was in touch with El Paso Mayor Dee Margo immediately after the shooting on Saturday,” Miyagishima said, “offering our full support as a city, and as neighbors with deep ties to our friends in El Paso. To that end, our Las Cruces city councilors and I would like to invite all Las Crucens to join us at the Downtown Civic Plaza on Monday evening to show our solidarity with the people of El Paso.”

“We know that it’s long past time to address the problem of domestic terrorism in our country,” Miyagishima said. “It will take all of our creativity, commitment and trust in one another to rein in the forces of violence that have been unleashed against our people. For now, at this time of deep pain, the councilors and I are inviting our fellow residents to join us in solidarity with our good friends to the south, and to stand in full support of our beautiful, diverse and welcoming border community."
