About the Performers:

For the past 30 years and more, Jim Malcolm has been the ultimate Scots troubadour, taking the traditional songs of Scotland and his own prizewinning compositions to all corners of the UK and around almost every state in the USA. His voice is one of the finest in Scotland, and his mellifluous guitar playing is the perfect accompaniment. He plays mouth organ to a standard you’ll rarely hear. In recent years his wife Susie has flown the empty nest to join him in concert. You may have heard her voice singing harmonies on Jim’s CDs. An award-winning traditional singer herself, Susie sings songs from the North East of Scotland and has a penchant for ballads. They have three CDs as a duo and together they offer a concert of harmonies and humour…tales from the road, the riverside and from the home front, and are not to be missed.

Susie was the first woman to win a bothy ballad singing competition, and she is a tradition bearer for the bothy ballads of North East Scotland. Her father learned the songs orally in the bothy on his father’s farm, and passed them on to Susie. He was a caber tosser and competed on the Highland Games circuit throughout Scotland. That meant long car journeys every weekend, and he helped pass the time by singing these old songs to his family. He could never have imagined that one day she would stand up in an American venue and sing these songs, perhaps sometimes to people whose own ancestors would have known and sung the songs in Scotland before emigrating.
