The Latest: 47-Year-Old Man Dies In Officer-Involved Shooting Thursday

The investigation continues into what led to Thursday evening’s officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 47-year-old man.

So far, the investigation has revealed that, about 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, officers were dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home on the 2400 block of Tiffany Drive. Shortly after arrival at the home, one of the officers discharged at least one round that struck the 47-year-old man.

Gary McKinney was pronounced deceased after being transported to an area hospital.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave which is standard protocol for the Las Cruces Police Department.

Further information cannot be released at this time as investigators from a multi-agency task force are still conducting interviews and combing through evidence.

The Officer-involved Incident Task Force is comprised of investigators from New Mexico State Police, Las Cruces Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police. Once completed, results of the investigation are shared with the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
