Students from Mexico can now study at New Mexico State University at a discounted tuition rate thanks to a new program dubbed Descubre, or discover.
The NMSU Board of Regents passed a resolution this spring discounting tuition for students from Mexico. The new tuition rate is about half that paid by out-of-state students. The estimated tuition rate per semester is $4,691 for full-time (15 credits) undergraduate students, and $3,975 for full-time (12 credits) graduate students.
“NMSU has a lot to offer students from Mexico, and we know these students have a lot to offer us in terms of their backgrounds, experiences and diversity,” said NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers. “I want to thank our Board of Regents, New Mexico Secretary of Higher Education Barbara Damron and others who supported the launch of this program, which began as a notion during a meeting in Chihuahua organized by the Legislative Finance Committee and State Senator John Arthur Smith.”
Cornell Menking, the associate provost for International and Border Programs, will formally announce the Descubre program during a news conference at 9 a.m. June 28 at Technology Hub Juarez, Av. Lopez Mateos 924.
Menking said the program’s name, Descubre, is consistent with NMSU’s “All About Discovery” theme.
“Mexico is typically one of the top three countries sending international students to NMSU, with approximately 175-200 studying at both the graduate and undergraduate level annually,” Menking said. “Despite NMSU’s long history of being a popular destination for students from Mexico, the Descubre Program is designed to attract still more Mexican students to the university.”
The reduced tuition rate for Mexican students will be effective this fall. To qualify for the Descubre program, students must:
• Be a Mexican citizen.
• Be on an F or J visa sponsored by NMSU’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services.
• Be admitted to an NMSU undergraduate or graduate degree program.
Both new and continuing students qualify for the Descubre program.
NMSU officials will enhance recruiting efforts in Mexico, especially in Chihuahua and Sonora. Menking said the Descubre program is also complemented by recent initiatives at NMSU to collaborate with Tecnológico Nacional de México (the National Institute of Technology of Mexico), CONACYT (the National Council of Science and Technology in Mexico), CONCYTECH (the National Council of Science, Technology and Technological Innovation in Mexico), and other Mexican institutions supporting higher education.
NMSU is a land-grant institution established in 1888 and has been ranked as a top tier university by U.S. News & World Report. NMSU has also been ranked by the Carnegie Foundation as a RU/H institution, or a research university with high research activity, and is designated as a NASA Space Grant College.
