Big Drop In Applications At UNM And ASU Law Schools

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The University of New Mexico School of Law and Arizona State University's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law admission applications have dropped off significantly since last year.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that UNM saw around 745 applications for its law school this year. That's a nearly 21 percent drop from the 2011 when the school had 942 applications.

Meanwhile, ASU's law school applications have declined by 23 percent since 2009.

According to data provided by the UNM law school, the number of applicants has gone down by about 36 percent since 2005.

UNM Law School Dean Kevin Washburn said media stories questioning the value of a law degree and the bad economy are partly to blame.

UNM admits about 240 law students a year, 115 of whom enroll.
