KRWG News received two first-place awards at the Society of Professional Journalists Colorado chapter’s Top of the Rockies contest April 20. Top of the Rockies is a regional, multi-platform contest for reporters and news organizations in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
KRWG News Director Anthony Moreno and KRWG Director of Content Fred Martino were part of a statewide team in the Solutions Journalism Network’s State of Change project. The State of Change project received first place in the Public Service Journalism medium market category and first place in the Business Enterprise Journalism medium market category.
The Public Service Journalism winning story was Moreno’s piece on a breed of cattle that does especially well in our region. Martino’s story regarding economic development in New Mexico was the Business Enterprise Journalism winner.
Martino said he is proud that his story helped to foster community engagement. He worked with nmpolitics.net to hold a focus group with residents in Truth or Consequences and talked with them about their impressions of the community and efforts to boost economic development in the area. He also sought the residents’ feedback on ways journalism can do a better job in covering the important issues they face.
“KRWG is honored to be part of the Solutions Journalism project. This award recognizes the impact of in-depth journalism produced by public media and the other partners across the state,” Martino said.
