Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Mesilla Park man after his neighbors called 911 to report hearing gunshots coming from inside the man’s home.
Deputies were sent to the 9000 block of Clovis Road just after 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2017. After knocking on the door, deputies heard a gunshot.
Shortly after, Steven Ortega, 49, opened the door but reportedly refused to show his hands. A small scuffle ensued and Ortega was tased before being taken into custody. Deputies recovered a rifle and several spent shell casings inside the home.
Ortega was arrested and transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he was booked on charges of resisting or obstructing and negligent use of a deadly weapon. He was released on his own recognizance the following day.
