Expert On Ramifications Of Affordable Care Act Repeal To Speak In Las Cruces

Las Cruces, NM— Health care expert Renée Despres will discuss the ramifications of the Affordable Care Act’s repeal on New Mexico at the meeting of WE’RE IN: Las Cruces on May 24. The talk begins at 5:00 p.m. at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, Las Cruces. Dr. Despres, a Research Fellow at the Burrell Institute for Health and Policy Research, is a consultant to health-care and nonprofit organizations and writes about health and health policy for both academic and mainstream audiences.

Her talk on May 23 will be based on the results of her published research, coauthored with Anne Barraza, also a Research Fellow at the Burrell Institute. “Our findings suggest that repeal of the ACA with any of the proposed replacement policies would have a devastating impact on New Mexico’s residents, health-care systems, and overall economy,” says Despres.

The white paper, Potential Impact of Repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was published by the Burrell Institute for Health and Policy Research. The paper assesses the potential impact of a repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) on New Mexico and examines the impact of current proposals to replace the law, including the American Health Care Act (AHCA) currently being deliberated by Congress.

Despres says they found that all of the proposals they analyzed would lead to health care becoming “less safe, less innovative, less focused on quality and value, and more expensive.” In addition to her research, she has written two health reference books for teens and has published more than 500 articles in national and international publications. She currently writes for the health information website YourMedicalSource.comand blogs at http:// composinghealthblog.wordpress.com.
