An inscription honoring the Confederacy has been removed from public display at the University of Texas in Austin.
The Austin American-Statesman reports the stone panels were removed last month from the South Mall.
President Gregory Fenves last summer said the inscription would stay. Fenves told the American-Statesman this week that he decided this spring that the inscription must go.
The inscription is dedicated to "the men and women of the Confederacy who fought with valor and suffered with fortitude that states rights be maintained" and who were "not dismayed by defeat nor discouraged by misrule."
Fenves says the inscription is inappropriate for UT's goal of diversity and inclusion. He says the panels are in storage and will be considered for possible exhibit at UT's Briscoe Center for American History.
