Former Las Cruces City Councilor Nathan Small announced his candidacy for the New Mexico House of Representatives, District 36. District 36 includes northwestern Las Cruces, parts of the East Mesa, and much of north-central Doña Ana County including Hatch.
Explaining his decision to run, Small cited concerns about the future of his district and the state.
“Too many New Mexicans are hurting, and we must do better for our district. I’m running because it’s only by understanding one another and working together that we can create jobs, be good natural resource stewards, and make the investments necessary for a successful future.”
Councilor Small played a leading role in re-development efforts like AmadorPróximo, energy savings through new technologies, Las Cruces’s largest street infrastructure rehab, and bringing diverse points of view into the political process. Small concludes, “Whether we live in Las Cruces, Doña Ana, or Hatch, in urban or rural areas, we all care deeply about our community’s future. This campaign is about building our future together.”
Small, who lives in Las Cruces, is a third generation New Mexican from a family of educators and ranchers. An avid sportsman and horseman, he was a strong advocate for the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. Serving two terms on the Las Cruces City Council, he chaired the City of Las Cruces Economic Development Committee and is a past board chair for the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley. In 2011 he received the Excellence in Range Management Award from the Society of Range Management and in 2012 was named Citizen of the Year by the Las Cruces Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
