The historic winter storm is creating a traffic nightmare in northern New Mexico. In a press release, the New Mexico State Police stated, "Based on information we have received from Texas and Oklahoma, Interstate 40 will not reopen anytime within the next 16 hours, and most likely will remain closed longer due to extreme inclement weather. Both Texas and Oklahoma have shut down I-40 travel across their states, and, therefore, New Mexico is forced to keep I-40 closed as well. Currently in Albuquerque, I-40 east of the Big-I is becoming obstructed with stranded commercial motor vehicle traffic."
ALERT From The New Mexico State Police:
1) All Albuquerque commuters should avoid traveling east of the Big-I interchange on Interstate 40. Morning commuters should obtain another route if they are traveling east of the Big-I on I-40, as they will not be able to pass due to the roadway being obstructed.
2) The New Mexico State Police would like to reach out to all motorists traveling to the eastern United States and request motorists make arrangements to travel on Interstate 10 if they are passing through New Mexico, as Interstate 40 will remain closed indefinitely.
