The Valencia County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that a deputy shot a man in Los Lunas.
Sgt. Chad Pierce, with the New Mexico State Police, says the deputy had been called to conduct a welfare check on the man Wednesday afternoon and at some point discharged his weapon, hitting the suspect.
The suspect has been transported to University of New Mexico Hospital and was in critical condition Wednesday night.
The deputy was not injured in the incident. It is unclear why the deputy fired at the suspect.
Pierce says an investigation is ongoing. Police are not yet releasing the man's identity or the identity of the deputy involved.
