Dona Ana County Soil And Water Conservation District Plans Election; Candidates Must File By Tuesday

An organization that lost a controversial election to raise property taxes last year is electing three new district supervisors in May.  With little notice…the deadline to run in the election is Tuesday.

The Dona Ana County Soil and Water Conservation District election to raise property taxes was extremely controversial…with long lines and some very unhappy voters.  In the end….those who did get a chance to vote turned down a proposed tax increase by a large margin.

Now….with little notice….the group is holding an election for three new district supervisors on Tuesday, May 5 for the seven-member board.   The group’s website says forms to file as a candidate have only been available in March….and the deadline to file as a candidate is Tuesday, March 17.

To run in district 1 or 2….you must be a resident land owner in the respective district.  To run in district 5, you simply must be a resident in the boundaries of the entire Dona Ana County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Candidacy forms are available in the District office at 760 Stern Drive, Suite 118.  The office is open 8am to noon and 1pm to 4:30pm.

Absentee ballots for the May 5 election will only be available April 5th through the 15th in the Bureau of Elections at the Dona Ana County government building.  More information available at the district website.
