A former El Paso Independent School District superintendent sentenced to more than three years in prison over a testing scandal has been released to a halfway house.
Federal prison records show Lorenzo Garcia was released Friday in the south-central area of the country to complete his sentence.
Garcia was hired in 2006 and served as superintendent until his 2012 arrest. He pleaded guilty to fraud in a scheme to improve the district's test scores by holding back some students so they would not take a state-required knowledge and skills test.
The scandal resulted in Texas education officials replacing El Paso ISD trustees with a board of managers.
