A 21-year-old man wanted on a warrant for allegedly beating and holding a woman against her will Friday night was taken into custody Saturday afternoon after an affray and disarming a deputy, and barricading himself in a home on the city’s East Mesa. Preliminary information from the investigation appears to show that at around 1 p.m. Saturday, July 12, a Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputy located Davalous Brown at a home on the 5200 block of Melody Lane. As the deputy attempted to execute the arrest warrant on Brown, the two became involved in a struggle and the suspect was able to gain control of the deputy’s Taser.
Brown is believed to have fled the home on Melody Lane and led the deputy on a foot pursuit to a home on the 5200 block of Rexview Road. At least one round was fired each by the deputy and a Las Cruces Police officer who responded to assist. Brown then fled back and barricaded himself in the home on Melody Lane.
The Las Cruces Police Department’s SWAT team and K-9 officers were deployed, and made several attempts to make contact with Brown. Two K-9s entered the home followed by members of the SWAT team who successfully took Brown into custody just after 3 p.m.
Brown was treated at the scene before being transported to El Paso. Brown faces charges of battery against a household member; resisting, evading or obstructing an officer; plus additional charges from today’s incident.
On Friday evening, Brown is alleged to have beat and held a 22-year-old woman against her will while the two drove in her vehicle. Shortly aftermidnight, the woman was finally able to call for help. Police responded to the home on the 5200 block of Melody Lane but Brown fled into an undeveloped area of the county. Officers subsequently obtained the warrant for Brown’s arrest.
The events leading to the officers’ discharge of weapons is being investigated by the Officer-involved Incident Task Force which includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State University Police and the Las Cruces Police Department.
