Las Cruces Police Arrest Teen In Stabbing

Police arrested a teenager suspected in the April 10 stabbing of a 19-year-old man in a north Las Cruces neighborhood.

Joey Perea, 16, is charged with one count each of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the 4200 block of Broadview where a 19-year-old man was suffering from at least one stab wound. The man was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Detectives learned that the 19-year-old man and his wife were driving home when they were accosted by a pair of teenagers who threw something at their vehicle. The man got out of the vehicle and confronted the boys, believed to be younger teenagers.

Witnesses told police that a fight broke out and the 19-year-old was stabbed by one of the younger teens. Detectives determined that Perea is the teenager suspected of stabbing the victim.

Police have identified the second teenager believed to be involved in the altercation though no charges have been filed against him.

Perea was booked into the juvenile section of the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is being held without bond.
