Abbott Fights Disability Lawsuits Against Texas

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R)

Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott has vigorously fought disability suits against Texas as the state's attorney general, despite enjoying the benefits of a 1990 federal law that helps guarantee access for disabled people.

Abbott has been in a wheelchair for almost 30 years after a tree fell on him while he was jogging.

Abbott has praised the Americans with Disabilities Act, which has helped provide ramps, wide doors and other accommodations that allow him to engage voters.

However, he states it is unconstitutional to force Texas to comply. And as attorney general he has battled several suits filed by disabled people against the state, including one in which he argues a woman is not disabled because she has prosthetic legs.
