Chasity McNeil can smile while she talks about her car accident.
“I got hit by a bus and then rear-ended.”
That’s because the collision happened on a simulator designed to mimic texting while driving.
She works on campus with ICT who co-sponsored the simulator along with AT&T.
“So what we’ll do is send out a text message…and the thrill of it is to see how far you can go driving while texting.”
Several students sat down at the simulator. Some did better than others, but most eventually crashed.
It was hard to keep up. I tried it myself and lasted about 10 minutes before I crossed the centerline and hit another car head on. Apparently I was above average, but it doesn’t exactly win the game.
“There is a danger when texting and driving…no one’s a good texter and driver.”
Five seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road while texting. While traveling 55mph, that's enough time to cover the length of a football field.
