Las Cruces Seeks Volunteers For Senior Transportation Program

The City of Las Cruces Network Volunteer Center is currently recruiting volunteers to drive homebound seniors to medical appointments, grocery shopping and other errands in the City of Las Cruces.  Volunteers age 55 and older may request mileage reimbursement for rides given.

A partnership of the City of Las Cruces Senior Programs and RoadRUNNER Transit, the Volunteer Senior Transportation Service is a new program to meet the growing demand for senior transportation options. Volunteers will provide free rides to seniors enrolled in Dial-A-Ride and the City’s door-to-door transit service in the volunteers’ private, safety-inspected vehicles.

Rides are scheduled pending volunteer availability Monday through Saturday. Volunteers choose the days and times they wish to drive and are provided with free, supplemental volunteer insurance coverage while on the job. Since the pilot program launched in July, volunteers have provided more than 40 rides to 19 different seniors. The Volunteer Senior Transportation Service needs additional volunteers to expand and serve more seniors.

The Volunteer Senior Transportation Service is a fantastic opportunity to lend a helping hand to Las Cruces seniors. For more information or to apply to be a volunteer driver, please call The Network Volunteer Center at 575-528-3035.
