Murder Trial Of NM Ex-Officer Wrapping Up

The trial of a former Albuquerque police officer accused of killing his wife is scheduled to resume and closing arguments could come as early as this week.

Levi Chavez is slated Tuesday to return to a New Mexico courtroom Tuesday as his defense attorney mounts a last ditch effort to prove his innocence.

Chavez is accused of shooting his 26-year-old wife, Tera Chavez, with his department-issued gun in 2007 at their Los Lunas home and then trying to make her death look like a suicide.

Prosecutors have called a number of Chavez's former mistresses to testify about conflicting accounts to where Chavez was the night his wife died.

But defense lawyer David Serna says Chavez has been as victim of an overly aggressive detective and a botched investigation.
