Las Cruces officials say the southern New Mexico city's population now tops 100,000.
The 2010 U.S. Census recorded a population of nearly 98,000 for Las Cruces, the state's second most populous city.
According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, Las Cruces officials say the city's population passed the 100,000 mark on April 1.
Tom Murphy, the city's Metropolitan Planning Organization officer, says the city estimated population by tracking building permits for housing.
