Landmark New Mexico Building Destroyed By Fire

A landmark building in Corrales that had a colorful history has been destroyed by fire.

The building best known as the Territorial House restaurant and bar from 1972 to 1987 went up in flames Sunday afternoon.

A Texas couple purchased the building in 2005 and reopened it under another name. Co-owner Winnell Adair tells the Albuquerque Journal that she and her husband have not decided whether to reconstruct it.

Corrales fire Chief Anthony Martinez says the cause of the fire is under investigation, but it did not appear to have been set deliberately.

The building dates back to the 1800s as a farmhouse. It also has hosted thumb-wrestling tournaments, which sparked noise complaints from neighbors.

Locals have long believed it is haunted by the ghosts of a couple who died violently in 1898.
