DEMING, N.M. (AP) — Nearly 50 federal prisoners have been transferred out of the Luna County Detention Center to other jails in New Mexico because of overcrowding concerns.
KOTS-AM reports (http://bit.ly/GYAUdV) that 48 federal inmates were removed from the Luna County jail and that some modular jails will require upgrades.
County officials say the removal accounts for less than 25 percent of federal inmates housed at the Luna County Detention Center.
Luna County Manager Kelly Kuenstler said the relocation of inmates won't result in any layoffs from the detention center.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Marshals District of New Mexico removed 190 federal prisoners from the Sandoval County Detention Center after three inmates committed suicide.
