New Sunland Park Mayor Fights For Access To City Hall

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) — A newly elected New Mexico mayor charged with extortion wants a court order to allow him to be on city property and speak with public employees.

Daniel Salinas was barred from Sunland Park's city hall after being accused of trying to force an opponent from the race with a secretly recorded video of him getting a topless lap dance.

Salinas was the top vote getter Tuesday.

His lawyer tells The Las Cruces Sun-News (http://bit.ly/xaagZR) he plans to file motions that would allow Salinas to perform the duties of mayor, despite the charges.

A former elections director says that even if Tuesday's results are made official by Friday, it doesn't mean Salinas will be sworn into office, in part because of legal filings.
