Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent Stan Rounds has announced the resignation of Tom Phelps as principal of Oñate High School.  Although his resignation becomes effective at the end of the school year — June 30, 2012 — Phelps will step down from his principal duties immediately, said Rounds.  Phelps cited health reasons as the basis for his resignation.

Late Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 21) the Superintendent spoke to the Oñate faculty and staff and commended Phelps’ work since joining the school district in 2010.

“I appreciate Mr. Phelps’ commitment to Oñate and to the community,” said Rounds.  “His leadership was instrumental as the school made, and continues to make, educational progress.”

Rounds said in order to maintain the school’s academic momentum and to create a smooth transition for the school, he has selected Oñate Assistant Principal David Day to replace Phelps, effective today (February 22). Day has been an assistant principal at Oñate since 2004 and has more than 28 years of educational experience.
