El Paso – The Army has identified the three Fort Bliss soldiers killed in a roadside bombing in eastern Afghanistan.
A Pentagon statement released Thursday says the soldiers died Saturday in the attack in Wardak province. The dead are Sgt. 1st Class Clark A. Corley Jr. of Oxnard, Calif; Spc. Ryan M. Lumley of Lakeland, Fla.; and Spc. Thomas J. Mayberry of Springville, Calif. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team from Fort Bliss, Texas.
The U.S.-led coalition recently shifted its focus from southern Afghanistan to the east, where militants are fighting Afghan and coalition troops along the long, porous border with Pakistan.
So far this year, 519 NATO service members have been killed in Afghanistan, including at least 389 Americans.
