New Mexico – A Public Education Department task force recommends that teachers be evaluated based on the achievement of their students.
The group's findings were announced Tuesday and the department posted a report on its website (http://bit.ly/oyLDn8).
The task force says half of the evaluation of some teachers should be based on their contributions to student academic growth as measured by standardized testing. Other assessment factors include observations of the teacher and measures developed by local schools.
The report recommends overhauling New Mexico's three-tier pay system for teachers and providing incentive pay for teachers in certain subjects, such as math and science.
The task force recommends delaying a merit-based pay system until the 2013-14 school year.
Gov. Susana Martinez formed the task force after a teacher evaluation measure died in this year's Legislature.
