New Mexico – ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRWG) State and federal officials say the number of traffic deaths related to drunk driving has declined in recent years, but more needs to be done and technology could be the key.
Technology that could be integrated into a vehicle to prevent a driver from operating it while impaired was part of the focus of a Senate field hearing Wednesday in Albuquerque.
Experts say such an alcohol detection system would be much different than traditional ignition interlocks.
They see this technology being available as an option in new vehicles. It would be fast, non-intrusive and super accurate.
U.S. Sen. Tom Udall is co-sponsoring legislation that would authorize funding for more research. The New Mexico Democrat says a passive in-vehicle detection system has the potential to end drunk driving.
