Raton, NM – Authorities say a nearly 28,000-acre wildfire along the New Mexico-Colorado border apparently was started by engine exhaust from an all-terrain vehicle.
The Track Fire began last Sunday north of Raton and is now 45 percent contained. All remained evacuated residents were allowed to return home Saturday.
Investigators from New Mexico State Forestry and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway say it appears an ATV rider trespassed onto land owned by BNSF railway through access from nearby private property.
The Colfax County Sheriff's Department now is seeking information on the person or persons riding or operating ATVs in the area near the origin of the fire.
