Las Cruces – Spaceport America officials say the first phase of construction at the southern New Mexico base is between 70 and 80 percent finished.
Officials tell the Las Cruces Sun-News the $32.5 million terminal-hangar for people preparing for a trip to space is about 77 percent complete.
A second phase and round of contracts includes plans for a visitor's center, a paved southern road to the spaceport and a vertical launch area.
Spaceport America Executive Director Christine Anderson says construction should be done in a year.
The spaceport is also starting to put infrastructure in place including soliciting bid proposals from companies that would provide fire, janitorial and mission planning services.
