Senate Panel OKs Bill Limiting NM Emission Rules

By KRWG News

SANTA FE, N.M. – The Senate Conservation Committee approved the bill Tuesday on a 5-1 vote.

The measure would prevent the state Environmental Improvement Board or local boards from adopting more stringent rules for reporting, verifying, capping or trading greenhouse gas emissions.

The Environmental Improvement Board passed a pair of much-debated greenhouse gas regulations last year aimed at curbing emissions from coal-fired power plants, refineries and other large polluters. Critics of the regulations have sought to have them overturned.

The executive director of Conservation Voters New Mexico, Sandy Buffett, says the legislation infringes on New Mexicans' rights to decide what's best for their communities.
