Hatch – Federal officials have marked the opening of a new apartment complex on the outskirts of Hatch that replaces apartments destroyed by flooding four years ago.
Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner was in the southern New Mexico community Tuesday for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Brunner says the construction of the new apartments shows something good can come out of a tragic event.
The August 2006 flood heavily damaged a 72-unit apartment complex, displacing its residents. Some eventually were relocated to a Federal Emergency Management Agency mobile home park in Rincon.
Federal officials say many of the displaced families are now moving into the new apartment complex.
