LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Las Cruces Public Schools officials say a gunshot fired outside a high school volleyball game earlier this week is believed to have been an isolated incident and not a sign of increasing school violence.
A suspect was taken by police from Las Cruces High School on Wednesday but no identification has been released.
Police say a handgun was fired into the air Tuesday night after a handful of teenage students began fighting in a parking lot after a girls volleyball game between Las Cruces High School and San Andres alternative high school in Mesilla.
School district spokeswoman Jo Galvan says it's not known if the person who fired the gun was involved in the fight.
Because of low attendance, Galvan says the event was not staffed by police or security guards.
