Alamogordo – Holloman Air Force Base is preparing to send troops, generators and water purification units to help earthquake-stricken Haiti.
The commander of Holloman's 49th Materiel Maintenance Squadron, Lt. Col. Mark Shoviak, says Holloman's Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources is sending the supplies and 1,250 service members to Port-au-Prince.
Shoviak says Holloman will send four filtration units with the initial deployment and four more later.
One unit can produce up to 30,000 gallons of drinking water per day.
Shoviak says Haitians are in dire need of clean water.
The troops' initial duty will be water purification.
They are expected to be deployed for four to six months.
