A handful of events and one temporary road closure may lead to some traffic congestion or travel delays in Las Cruces this weekend.
One temporary road closure will take place Saturday morning on University Avenue for New Mexico State University’s annual Homecoming Parade. The parade will force the temporary closure of University Avenue, and all intersections that meet University Avenue, between Triviz Drive and El Paseo Road. The closure will last from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Also taking place between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday is the Back the Blue Motorcycle Rally and Fundraiser at the Barnett Harley Davidson store on Avenida de Mesilla. No roadblocks are anticipated, but traffic may briefly be stopped to allow rally participants to enter Avenida de Mesilla.
The Pride Fall Festival begins at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Downtown Las Cruces. No road closures are expected but traffic in the downtown area may briefly be stopped to allow parade participants to cross roadways.
On Sunday, Oct. 7, the USO 8th Annual Oryx Cycling Event will run through a portion of Las Cruces. The event begins at 6 a.m. Sunday and should last until about 1 p.m. The event will begin at the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, head east to Sonoma Ranch Boulevard and then north to Bataan Memorial East. Roads expected to be utilized for the event are University Avenue, Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, Bataan Memorial East and Bataan Memorial West. The event will return to the Farm and Ranch Museum using a similar path. No full road closures are anticipated but the right, outside, lanes of all roadways will be used for bicycle traffic. Police expect to temporarily stop traffic at some intersections to allow the bicyclists to pass.
Also on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m., there will be a 5K run beginning at the Farm and Ranch Museum and heading east on University Avenue to Centennial High School. Runners will follow the same roadways back to the Farm and Ranch Museum.
The Las Cruces Police Department asks motorists to obey all posted signs and any officers directing traffic. Motorists should also be on the lookout for pedestrian traffic, bicyclists, motorcyclist and all slower-moving traffic.
