Warrant Issued for Subject of SWAT Callout in Las Cruces

The subject of an hours-long SWAT callout on Bellamah Drive was not in the home when police entered the residence Thursday afternoon.

Shortly before 8 a.m., Las Cruces police were dispatched to the report of a domestic-related incident at a home on the 1700 block of Bellamah Drive. Police were told 41-year-old Richard Espino used a firearm to threaten a relative. First-arriving officers were told by relatives that Espino was still inside the home and likely armed.

The Las Cruces Police Department’s SWAT team, with assistance from New Mexico State Police and the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, was activated to assist in making contact with Espino. LCPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team tried to make telephonic contact but were unsuccessful.

Investigators obtained a warrant for Espino’s arrest while SWAT personnel surrounded the home and gave multiple commands for Espino to exit. Chemical agents and a police robot were introduced into the residence. Shortly before 4 p.m. an LCPD K-9 unit entered the home but found no signs of Espino. Shortly thereafter, SWAT personnel entered the home and confirmed Espino was not there.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Espino who is described as 5-feet-9-inches tall and approximately 165 pounds. Espino may be armed. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.

Police blocked several roadways in the area during today’s SWAT callout. Nearby residents were afforded the opportunity to leave their homes or shelter in place. Others were encouraged to avoid the area until the situation was resolved. The Las Cruces Police Department thanks those who cooperated with this effort.
